The Origins of Reiki
The origins of Reiki can be traced back to ancient Tibet, dating back thousands of years. This healing technique was re-discovered in the mid 1800’s by Dr. Mikao Usui of Japan, however Reiki as a healing system has only been used and taught in the West since the late 1930’s.
What is Reiki?
Reiki is a safe, gentle, non-intrusive, hands on healing technique which uses universal energy to ease physical ailments without using pressure, manipulation or massage. It is a holistic therapy which balances, and harmonises all aspects of the person – body, mind, emotions and spirit. Reiki reinforces the body’s natural ability to heal, and is complementary to all other therapies.
The word REIKI – pronounced Ray Kee – is usually translated as “Universal Life-force” This is the energy that flows around and through all living things.
Reiki is NOT:
What to expect from a Reiki treatment.
No clothing needs to be removed for a Reiki treatment. You will be asked to make yourself comfortable on a therapy couch, or if you prefer you can sit in a low backed chair and you will be offered a light blanket if you wish.
The therapist stands behind or to the side and may either gently place his / her hands on or just above your head. Holding each position for a few minutes the therapist will gradually work from your head down the body finishing at the feet. Some therapists will work down the front of your body, then ask you to turn over and repeat the process working down your back.
Your therapist will guide you and should inform you before they start as to the order that they intend to carry out the treatment process.
Every Reiki session is unique to the individual client with many different effects being reported. These include deep relaxation, feelings of peace, security and well being, a deep comforting warmth flowing through the body, feelings of “floating” – the experiences are as varied as the clients. Many clients fall asleep during treatment and will wake feeling calm and refreshed.
